MATCH : Kenta Kobashi v Steve Williams

EVENT : Budokan Hall Show

VENUE : Budokan Hall, Tokyo

DATE : 3rd September 1994

Background : At this time in AJPW the roster was jam packed full of showcase talent that were putting on great matches every week including Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada, Stan Hansen and the two powerhouses in this match Kenta Kobashi and Steve Williams. 'Dr. Death' Steve Williams would go into this match as Triple Crown Champion having defeated Misawa for the strap just a few months prior. Kobashi had never won the Triple Crown but was every bit a contender to it over the last few years now. This was a very interesting time to be a fan of Japanese wrestling as it was very much their boom period so to speak.

MATCH REVIEW : Everything that All Japan was touching at this time was turning into wrestling gold and this match was no different. Both men put on one hell of a shift and we the viewers reaped the rewards. This is in my opinion the best Steve Williams match of all time and that statement says a lot. Both Williams and Kobashi obliterated each other with chops and suplexes for 40 minutes of excellence. For anyone who has watched very little or no Japanese wrestling then I recommend this to be one of the first to watch. Kentra tries everything in his arsenal to beat Williams but comes up short in the end against the American. Unfortunately, it would be another couple of years before Kobashi eventually manages to lift the Triple Crown Title that he so rightfully deserves. An absolute classic!!
