MATCH : Akira Taue/Toshiaki Kawada v Jun Akiyama/Mitsuharu Misawa

EVENT : Budokan Hall Event

VENUE : Budokan Hall, Tokyo

DATE : 6th December 1996

CHAMPIONSHIP : World's Strongest Tag Determination League

BACKGROUND : The Holy Demon Army team of Akira Taue and Toshiaki Kawada had been together for a successful three years in AJPW. Together they had held the AJPW Tag Titles on three occasions but one thing that had eluded them in the past was the World's Strongest Tag Determination League which they had competed in for years. Every year they had entered the Demon Army came up a little short. This year they managed to get into the finals against long time rival Mitsuharu Misawa and his newest partner Jun Akiyama. Unlike Taue & Kawada, Misawa had won this competition previously but could this be the Holy Demon Army's year?

MATCH REVIEW : The Holy Demon Army had been having some fantastic matches with Misawa and the legendary Kenta Kobashi to the point where one of the matches from 1995 is highly regarded as one of the best AJPW matches ever! This match is definitely a classic and pushes that match all the way! This match really made all four men look like the stars they were, especially Akiyama, who got a lift from these matches. The rivalry between Kawada and Misawa is a thing of beauty at times and I could watch there matches all day every day! Highly recommended with a great pay off ending!
