MATCH : Kenta Kobashi v Mitsuharu Misawa

EVENT : Budokan Hall Show

VENUE : Budokan Hall, Tokyo

DATE : 20th January 1997

CHAMPIONSHIP : AJPW Triple Crown Title

BACKGROUND : Not much to say about the build up to a Misawa v Kobashi match other than that these two men are renowned for their awesome encounters. Kobashi was going into this match as AJPW Triple Crown Champion but Misawa had won the title twice before and was eager to be only one of three men to lift it on three seperate occasions. So could he triumph or would Kobashi retain his title...

MATCH REVIEW : What a wonderful match! Many fans of Japanese Puroresu claim this to be the best match in wrestling history. Mitsuharu Misawa and Kenta Kobashi were both the first two men to be entered into my Roll Of Honour and it is matches like this that proves why. The whole layout of the match is phenomenal including Kobashi's early punishment of Misawa and the amazing finish that balances perfectly between big moves but not going overkill with it. Writing about these matches is not easy because some times it is just easier to watch what is generally just an athletic masterpeice. Misawa would go on to hold the Triple Crown for as long as 16 months but Kobashi would have more opportunities to regain his title further down the line.
