MATCH : Hirooki Goto v Hiroshi Tanahashi

PROMOTION : NJPW

EVENT : Destruction 2007

VENUE : Tokyo, Japan

DATE : 11th November 2007

CHAMPIONSHIP : IWGP Heavyweight Title

BACKGROUND : This was the very first Destruction PPV that had been promoted by New Japan Wrestling. Although most of the matches on the PPV featured wrestlers from TNA, the main event was purely between two NJPW stars for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Hirooki Goto is the challenging babyface who has been on a roll since his return from Mexico whilst Hiroshi Tanahashi is the heel champion who was five months into his second reign as champion. So could Goto win his first ever Heavyweight Title?...

MATCH REVIEW : The basic story of the match revolves around Tanahashi working entirely on Goto's knee. The crowd were booing Tanahashi like crazy which was brilliant. Eventually Tanahashi gets Goto to tap out after failing to put him away with all his usual power moves. This has the usual NJPW great storytelling with Tanahashi playing the cocky heel to perfection and the work rate is immense from both men. It's not hard to see why Tanahashi became such a legend in New Japan over the years with such great heel work that the crowd goes from hot to boiling in the opening exchanges.
