MATCH : Ric Flair v Ricky Steamboat

PROMOTION : NWA

EVENT : Chi-Town Rumble

VENUE : UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Ilinois

DATE : 20th February 1989

CHAMPIONSHIP: NWA World Heavyweight Title

Background : This was the first of the famous set of three matches that Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat would have with each other in 1989. Flair was in his seventh reign as NWA World Heavyweight Champion going into this match having held the title now for well over a year. Meanwhile, Steamboat had just recently returned to the NWA after a spell with the WWF. Just one month prior to this event Steamboat had pinned Flair in a tag team match and had promised the fans he would do the same again but this time for the strap. The background story of this match would be Steamboat representing the common family man whilst Flair was all about expensive tastes and a luxury lifestyle. Could Steamboat live his dream and complete the promise he made to the fans to defeat Flair?...

MATCH REVIEW : This is easily one of the greatest feuds in North American wrestling history and possibly even one of the greatest feuds in wrestling ever!! This was the first televised match between these two men since Steamboat's return and it really did impress everyone. This match was so well played out that the NWA decided to book another two more matches in this feud over the next few months. Steamboat would gain his first ever World Championship at the end of this match and many feel he thouroughly deserved it after putting on so many classic matches over the years. In fact many feel that Steamboat should have been given more time with the belt. The craziest thing regarding this match would be the fact that it was incrediblely brilliant but still 3rd best when it comes to the matches between these two over the that year which says a lot for the quality of the rivalry. A special mention also has to go to Jim Ross on the commentary table as this match was greatly enhanced by a man who sounded like he really enjoyed calling it.
