MATCH : Eddie Gilbert/Ron Simmons v The Fantastics

EVENT : Clash of the Champions 4

VENUE : UTC Center, Chattanooga, Tennessee

DATE : December 7th 1988

BACKGROUND : This match was the final of a tournament designed to crown new US Tag Team champions. The previous champions, Midnight Express, were forced to vacate the titles when they won the NWA World Tag Team belts so a tournament was erected. Originally, The Fantastics were supposed to face off against The Sheepherders in the final but with the Sheepherders signing for WWF (as the Bushwackers) the semi final match against Eddie Gilbert and Ron Simmons was reversed. The Fantastics defeated Mike Rotunda and Steve Williams to get to the final, could they overcome Simmons & Gilbert to lift the straps?

MATCH REVIEW : This was a very strong face vs face match with the crowd hot for both teams. Eddie Gilbert was the overall crowd favourite with him being the hometown boy and the arm work on him towards the end of the match made the finish something special. I really enjoyed this tag match as it had a great flow to it and also had a slight swerve with the lack of an expected hot tag. The basic storyline revolves around The Fantastics unwillingly having to take full advantage of Gilbert's hurt arm which adds a nice emotional sense to the match. Jim Ross on commentary also deserves credit as he made the match and the US Tag Titles seem more important!
