MATCH : Fabulous Freebirds/Samoan Swat Team v Midnight Express/Road Warriors/Steve Williams

EVENT : Great American Bash 1989

VENUE : Baltimore Arena, Baltimore, Maryland

DATE : 23rd July 1989

STIPULATION : WarGames Match

BACKGROUND : When I think of the year 1989 the first thing that comes in to my head is great tag team wrestling. In the WWF you had teams such as Hart Foundation, Brainbusters, Demolition, The Rockers, The British Bulldogs....and the list goes on! Over in the NWA there were teams like Road Warriors, Midnight Express, The Freebirds and again the list goes on. To determine new NWA World Tag Team champions a tournament was devised that was eventually won by The Fabulous Freebirds but the whole tournament was marred in controversy as the matches had loads of interferences. To settle the score The Freebirds would join up with Samoan Swat Team to take on Road Warriors and Midnight Express with their new ally Steve Williams. The match was made a War Games match so which tag teams would impress and get the victory?

MATCH REVIEW : This match was a proper battle from start to finish! The negative of War Games matches is that the heel team always win the coin toss and that the match probably wouldn't work if they didn't which makes the story the same in most of them. In saying that, a War Games match rarely disappoints and this was no different. The match beyond portion lasted longer than most do which didn't hurt and the match was more of an all round brawl which worked well. A great match with major props to Jim Cornette and Paul E Dangerously for great managerial work outside the ring too!
