MATCH : Bob Backlund v Ken Patera

VENUE : Madison Square Garden, New York

DATE : 19th May 1980

STIPULATION : Texas Death Match

BACKGROUND : Bob Backlund had been WWF World Champion for a couple of years and had been defeating some big names all around the world in some real long matches. Ken Patera had been feuding with Backlund for a number of years even before he had the won the Championship. This match would be contested under 'Texas Death' rules such as the hatred these two men had for each other. Patera was the WWF Intercontinental champion at the time but only Backlund's World Title would be on the line. So could he keep his impressive streak running or would Patera be able to lift his first World title?

MATCH REVIEW : This match was fantastic and so full of emotion. A back and forth match that had all the excitement you could ask for in a World Title match which was part the reason why it was voted by PWI as match of the year. These two men worked really well together and were a staple of the mid-80's in the WWF. Backlund would hold the title for another 3 and a bit years whilst Patera was never really given the recognition that he probably deserved!
