MATCH : Chris Benoit v Chris Jericho v Steve Austin

PROMOTION : WWF

EVENT : King of the Ring 2001

VENUE : East Rutherford, New Jersey

DATE : 24th June 2001

CHAMPIONSHIP : WWF World Title

STIPULATION : Triple Threat Match

BACKGROUND : Steve Austin and Triple H had been feuding with Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho over the WWE Tag Team Titles on TV over the few weeks prior to the King of the Ring PPV. When Jericho and Benoit defeated 'The Two Man Power Trip' for the tag belts, Triple H tore one of his quadriceps which put him out of action for over a year. It was then decided that Austin would have to defend his World Title against both men in a triple threat match. With Vince McMahon in his corner would Austin be able to defeat the two Canadians or would Benoit and Jericho work together to make sure a new champion is crowned?

MATCH REVIEW : This was the last PPV before the WCW invasion storyline was the main focus in the WWF/E explaining why Booker T was involved. Historically I believe the triple threat stipulation is slightly flawed but sometimes, as is the case in this situation, the three men involved can tell a good story. This was a great match with loads of near falls and is only really let down by a very anti-climatic finish. Unfortunately, Benoit was injured during this match which left him and Triple H on the sidelines throughout the whole invasion storyline. A classic match that involved three of the best wrestlers at this time!
