MATCH : 30 Man Royal Rumble Match

EVENT : Royal Rumble 1992

VENUE : Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, New York

DATE : 19th January 1992

Background : At the back end of 1991 Hulk Hogan was stripped of the WWF World Title after two of his matches with The Undertaker at Survivor Series and Tuesday in Texas both ended in controversial circumstances. WWF President, Jack Tunney, made a decision that the winner of the 1992 Royal Rumble match would automatically win the vacant World Title. Many of the wrestlers had a background story going into the match making it more anticipating to see who would come out as champion. Some of the participants included British Bulldog who had recently won an over-the-top-rope Battle Royale in the UK, Ric Flair who was new to the company and had been claiming to be the real World Champion since his arrival, Shawn Michaels who had recently split from his longtime tag team partner Marty Jannetty, Roddy Piper who had won the Intercontinental Title just hours before going into this match, Jake Roberts and Randy Savage who were in the middle of a fierce rivalry that had seen Roberts' snake sink his teeth into Savage's arm, Sid Justice who was another new arrival to the company and The Undertaker and Hulk Hogan who both had been given late numbers in the Rumble due to their recent title history. This would be the 5th Royal Rumble match of all time but also the most important at this point with it being the first time the Title was on the line for the winner. Five former World champs would enter this match and also three future World champs making it a very impressive line-up.

MATCH REVIEW : This was the first match that I showed my partner after about a year into our relationship. I chose this match in particular as I remember as a kid having it on VHS and wanting to watch it every Saturday morning. It is a thoroughly entertaining match that has you on the edge of your seats cheering on your favourite wrestler to go on and win. One of the highlights of this match is the excellent commentary from Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon who provide an interesting backdrop to the action with Heenan vocally siding with Ric Flair. One of the great things about a Royal Rumble is that it has the ability to set up matches perfectly for Wrestlemania which it did here by building up Hogan and Sid for Wrestlemania 8. This was easily the best Royal Rumble match in WWF history and even 20 years on is still one of the most fun matches that I can ever remember in the history of wrestling.
