MATCH : Randy Savage v Ricky Steamboat

PROMOTION : WWF

EVENT : Wrestlemania 3

VENUE : Pontiac Silverdome, Michigan

DATE : 29th March 1987

Championship : WWF Intercontinental Title

BACKGROUND : 'Macho Man' Randy Savage had been WWF Intercontinental champion for over a year going into this match and had been gaining a lot of attention as a first class performer in the ring. The feud with Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat began when Savage attacked Steamboat ahead of a scheduled match by dropping an elbow on to his throat and crushing his larynx into the ringside guard rail. This injury would put Steamboat out of action for several months but on his return he vowed revenge on Savage and what better way to seek it than at the grandest stage of them all, Wrestlemania 3, in front of a record 93,000 fans?

MATCH REVIEW : I have met and spoke to many people who regard this as the greatest match of all time! I personally find it an amazing match and can easily see why people place it at the top of their list. The athleticism and story telling in this match makes it the best WWF match from the 1980's which is an era that I and many other wrestling fans grew up with. Randy Savage dropped the title in this match for one reason only, to shoehorn him into the main event picture and to start his build to be pushed as the next WWF Champion. Steamboat on the other hand would lose the Intercontinental Title in a few months to Honky Tonk Man and wouldn't last much longer in the WWF signalling a return to the NWA. This has been one of my favourite inductions to write because this match brings back many fond memories of my my enjoyment of the 80's era.
