MATCH : Razor Ramon v Shawn Michaels

PROMOTION : WWF

EVENT : Wrestlemania X

VENUE : Madison Square Garden, New York

DATE : 20/03/1994

STIPULATION : Ladder Match

CHAMPIONSHIP : WWF Intercontinental Title

Background : This feud all started when Shawn Michaels was stripped of the Intercontinental Title by President Jack Tunney for not defending it enough. Razor Ramon won a specially designed tournament to become new Intercontinental Champion by beating Rick Martel in the final. Shawn wasn't too happy about the decision to strip him of the title and claimed he was still champion all the while carrying a replica title belt. It was decided that these two would settle the differences in the first ever ladder match on Pay-Per-View. The ladder match was a new concept that had only been played out once before on WWF TV between Michaels and Bret Hart. The idea is simple - climb the ladder and retrieve both the real belt and the replica one that are hanging 20 feet in the air.

MATCH REVIEW : This match showcased two performers with two completely different styles. Shawn would try and use his speed and agility along with with his vast aerial techniques whilst Razor would use his power and strength to mishandle and punish Shawn. What this match done was let these contrasting styles merge perfectly. This match had great storytelling and proved that using physcology is vital in matches with stipulations like this. This match was not just great to watch but also a very important match for the WWF/E as it stood as a platform for many future performers and ushered in the start of a new era in professional wrestling. The new generation of superstars like The Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian all class this match as the best of all time and every time I watch it, I find it very hard to disagree. To me I find that this match will never be lost in time and will be classed as the beginning of the ladder match generation. Shawn's desire to win this match would highlight to people the heart he had and would eventually lead to him becoming a legendary WWF/E champion whilst Scott 'Razor Ramon' Hall would defect to WCW and become notorious as one of the co-leaders of the NWO.
