MATCH : Royal Rumble Match 1997

PROMOTION : WWE

EVENT : Royal Rumble 1997

VENUE : Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas

DATE : 19th January 1997

BACKGROUND : There was very little build up to the 1997 Royal Rumble in the sense that there was no clear cut obvious winners. The line up was pretty strong though with the likes of Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Steve Austin and Vader all taking part. The winner would go on to face the WWF Champion at Wrestlemania 13 and the sign of a good Rumble is just how many Wrestlemania feuds can be made from the match.

MATCH REVIEW :

This was a great Royal Rumble with an interesting ending that paved the way for the eventual Classic at Wrestlemania 13 between Austin and Hart in which they made a double turn. Austin's performance in this match is up there with some of the best solo Rumble performances in WWF/E history as he does all he can to win the match! There was all kinds of mix ups in the roster between the Rumble and Wrestlemania but the Rumble did deliver in setting up Hart v Austin, Goldust v Triple H and Ahmed Johnson v Nation of Domination matches. As a whole a very entertaining Rumble match featuring some minor surprises including Jerry Lawler leaving the commentary position to take part.
